The Hairy (and not-so Hairy) Business of Aging

I turned 40 this month. And while growing older has its perks…most of which escape me at this moment…apparently now weird hair situations are happening. Like grey hairs. In special places. Long, wiry chin hairs. Add to the mix that I found a sudden bald spot on my head and we have a bit of a situation. My mother embraced her grey hair and so do I. I just embrace it with highlights. Chin hairs can be plucked. Buggers. But this sudden baldness has me more than a little frazzled. I discovered it as I was idly running my fingers through my hair (as girls are wont to do) while…

    Turning 40 with No Regrets

I’m wearing a ridiculous headband with shiny silver stars that say ‘Happy New Year.’ Completely content. This is how I ushered in the new year, a glass of champagne in-hand, surrounded by my family and good friends, toasting to a not-so-bad year-gone-by and welcoming 2014. Considering some epically bad years before this last one, 2013 was full of pleasant surprises. We stayed more or less healthy (give or take a broken bone) and more or less happy. Also, as I reflect upon my birthday post of last year (yes, today is my birthday…and I turn 40; but I’ll come back to this momentarily) I realize I reached every one of my…

Tough Mudder: Conquering fears, mounting Everest and earning the orange

I survived Tough Mudder. I. Survived. Tough. Mudder. Also, somewhere, Hell hath frozen over and pigs are flying. But, yes, I am officially a proud orange-head-band-wearing Tough Mudder. And, yes, it’s been two weeks. So in some circles this could be considered ‘old news’ but, Whoa. No, seriously. Whoa. I mean, how do I even begin to describe the feeling that comes from crossing the Finish line after 17 kms of hamstring-havoc-wreaking mountainous climbs and descents peppered with 24 obstacles that test not only your physical limits but your mental resilience? Well, it looks a little like this: Let’s put this into perspective. Exercise and I have a love/hate relationship. Love…

    Tough Mudder or Bust!

As far as Saturdays go, this one is about to go down in history books as either very stupid or ultimately epic. My husband and I (and our friends, Brian and Laura, in the other car) are heading to Tough Mudder at Mount St. Louis today. It’s early. Still dark out. Surprisingly, there are quite a few vehicles on the road at this hour. Maybe they’re all headed to the same destination. Or maybe I’m rambling. So, basically, as I sit here, blogging from my iPhone, I am FREAKING OUT! My stomach is all flip-floppy. And my mind keeps doing things like THINKING ABOUT OBSTACLES. In fact, I could barely…

Recap of One Newbie’s First Foray into the World of Obstacle Course Races: Warrior Dash 2013

I am no longer a mud race virgin! A little over two weeks ago, and as I inch closer to the big four-oh, I scratched another item off of my 2013 list of goals. I completed my first Warrior Dash in Barrie, ON, with my bestie, Laura. This was my first obstacle-course-mud-run-type race and it was wicked good fun! Even better was that all charitable donations went to SickKids. Make no mistake, while the experience was totally fun and crossing the finish line completely exhilarating, the 5K course was not without its challenges, being constructed on a ski hill and all. And while I completed each obstacle, I realized that…
